Welsh Society St. David's Day Celebration March 1
The Sarasota Welsh Society will hold its 34th annual St. David’s Day celebration banquet on March 1 at Laurel Oak Country Club, Sarasota. Social hour begins at 5:30, dinner at 6:30 followed by singing and program. Guest speaker will be Welsh-Canadian author, Barrie Doyle, on the “Mystery of Prince Madoc” who according to Welsh tradition sailed to America in 1170, long before Columbus. Some early settlers and missionaries reported Native tribes who could understand Welsh, and whose language included Welsh words and accent. Thomas Jefferson, himself of Welsh ancestry, believed the story and instructed Welsh explorers Lewis and Clark to seek out the Welsh Indians and Welsh stone structures on their journeys West.
