Princess Smith: Unfiltered

January 11 – March 5, 2018

Opening Reception January 18, 2018, 5:00-7:30pm

Artist Lecture January 18 at 6:00pm

Princess Smith’s depictions of the minority female explore interrelated concepts of beauty and imperfection, innocence and deviance, struggle and strength. Through drawings and paintings, Smith’s exhibition at Gallery 3@HCC will also explore social injustices caused by slavery and racism through provocative representations of the body and emotionally charged tableaus. Smith received her MFA from the University of South Florida in 2016 and currently lives and works in Tampa, FL.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

PRINCESS SMITH is a Tampa native and graduate of Jefferson High School. She received her A.A. in Studio Art from Hillsborough Community College in 2009, a B.F.A. in Painting at the University of Tampa in 2012, and her M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing at the University of South Florida in 2016. Her work has been recognized with numerous exhibitions, commissions, and awards, including the Emerging Artist award at the 43rd Annual Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts in 2013. In 2016, Smith was selected by recording artist Swizz Beatz to participate as one of four emerging artists in a campaign program that brought her work to the Brooklyn Museum and the Bronx Museum of the Arts in New York City, culminating in a silent auction at the internationally renowned Sotheby’s Auction House. Smith has supported the visual arts in the Tampa Bay community as an independent curator and local educator, and her work can be found in regional collections and institutions such as the Florida Holocaust Museum, Gallerie 909, the Robert W. Saunders Library, and the Hillsborough County Commissioners’ Public Art Program.
