It’s that time of year again as students and faculty artists from around the world converge on Sarasota for three weeks of first class music making. Classical WSMR features a live performance each week of the festival starting with faculty artist Julie Landsman who is one of the most distinguished performers and teachers of our time. She held the position of Principal Horn of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra for twenty-five years, and now enjoys a wide variety of other musical activities. Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield was named cultural ambassador of New Orleans, and the state of Louisiana, back in 2003, when he was just 25. He had already founded the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, the band that he's bringing to the Tampa Bay Area. Bob Seymour caught up with Irvin Mayfield on Saturday Night Jazz, in an hour of conversation and music from that Crescent City big band, as well as one of Mayfield’s other groups, Los Hombres Calientes.

Classical Performance - Strings & Hammers - February 17, 2015
Strings and Hammers is in residence at USF and they stop by Classical WSMR to play for you live! Strings & Hammers is a twist of the traditional piano trio with violin and cello. Founded by Eunmi Ko, Sini Virtanen, and Julia Keller, the ensemble has the unusual instrumentation of piano, violin, and double bass. The members met each other at the Eastman School of Music while they were graduate students there. They shared the common interest in chamber music and new music, and naturally, they started playing together in 2013. The ensemble explores chamber music repertoire of the twentieth and twenty-first century and commissions works from emerging composers. Kenny Drew, Jr. was a one-of-a-kind artist, a virtuoso at home in jazz and classical music, with a sound at the piano that was instantly recognizable. He made his home in St. Petersburg for many years, and passed away this week at age 56. The charismatic trumpeter and singer gained acclaim years ago portraying Louis Armstrong in the musical ‘Satchmo,’ and was featured with most of the top big bands. He’s performed with more than 50 symphony orchestras and is in town to play with the Sarasota Orchestra in a show called ‘Satchmo, Fats, & The Duke’.
