Giuseppe Verdi: I Vespri Siciliani - Four Seasons
Tonight on our Evening Masterwork, we feature a sort of piece within a piece. It is the Four Seasons ballet music from Verdi’s opera I Vespri Siciliani. It’s a part of the opera that is actually often excluded in productions of the work today: mostly it was in vogue to compose a third-act ballet sequence in an opera in Verdi’s time, but not really anymore. This ballet sequence was dictated by the libretto, during a part of the story where Janus, the God of New Year, starts a series of dances followed by dances by each of the seasons.
