Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 1 in g “Winter Daydreams”

Unlike Tchaikovsky’s “Little Russian” or “Polish” symphonies, whose nicknames were given by critics at a much later date, Tchaikovsky named his First Symphony “Winter Dream.” He even went further, titling two of the symphony’s movements; the first movement “Dreams of a Winter Journey,” and the second “Desolate Land, Land of the Mists.” These titles don’t necessarily make the symphony programmatic in a story-telling way – such titles were common in music of that period. But the symphony does evoke a mood and atmosphere of winter, and it’s easy to imagine this music accompanying a wintry landscape.  [Photo: http://bit.ly/2BoC7ZC]
