Joaquin Rodrgio: Concierto Madrigal for two guitars
This evening’s masterwork is Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Concierto Madrigal” for two guitars, based on an anonymous Renaissance madrigal “Felices ojos mios,” or Happy eyes of mine. We know of the traditional concerto to be a solo work similar in the form to a symphony, consisting of 3 or 4 movements. In this work, though, Rodrigo has taken the Renaissance tune and treated it to ten different variations – in ten movements - and each movement has its own special character. You could actually think of them more as dance episodes rather than movements.
