Then & Now 11/22: Can you Handel it?
Four works by Handel had their premieres on this date! In 1712, Handel’s opera “Il pastor fido,” was first performed at the Queen’s Theater in London. Then in 1727, his opera “Riccardo Primo” premiered in London, in 1739, it was the “Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day,” in London at Lincoln’s Inn Field, and finally in 1740, Handel’s opera “Imeneo” premiered in London billed as an “operetta”.
We’re getting close to the time of year when Handel’s most famous work is performed. You’ll have several opportunities to hear Messiah in our concert halls and various churches over the next several weeks. The Sarasota Choral Society presents its annual production of the Christmas portion of Messiah Saturday, December 9, at the Church of the Palms. On December 10th, Choral Artists of Sarasota will put a gospel twist on Messiah with a concert called Too Hot to Handel. And running December 21st through the 23rd, The Florida Orchestra and the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay will hold their productions of Handel’s Messiah in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Indian Rocks.
