Firefighter Back Pain (rebroadcast)
The leading cause of disability and early retirement for firefighters is back injuries – not really a surprise when you consider they’re lugging as much as a hundred pounds of gear in the field. Armed with a $1.3 million grant from FEMA, the University of South Florida is recruiting members of the Tampa Bay area’s three largest fire departments for a study of an exercise regimen that hopes to reduce the risk of such injuries. Find out more on this rebroadcast of University Beat on WUSF Public Media.
The first of Dr. Mayer's three studies was reported in the American Journal of Health Promotion.
