Dominic Walker - Tributes to Martin Luther King
This week we’ll focus on pianist Cyrus Chestnut, who turns 55 on January 17th. Though Cyrus got an early start with singer Jon Hendricks, it was his stint with Wynton Marsalis in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s that catapulted him into the upper echelon of jazz. Known as the “young lions” Wynton and his peers pioneered what became known as neo-bop or post-bop, a blending of bebop, hard bop and modal jazz ala Miles Davis.
On the “Other Nine to Five,” Dominic Walker shares tributes to Martin Luther King on the holiday named in his honor. Plus, more songs featuring our focus artist of the week, pianist Cyrus Chestnut. Then later, on the Midnight Standard, we’ll hear another version of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps.” The adventure begins tonight at nine on WUSF 89.7. [Photo: http://bit.ly/2nwX2Ed]
