Dominic Walker: Thad Jones

Dominic Walker: Thad Jones

This week we’ll focus on trumpeter Thad Jones. Born March 28, 1923, Jones came from a very musical family. Thad got his professional start at age 16 and, after a stint in the army, joined the Count Basie Band in 1954. He remained with Basie for 9 years and subsequently formed the legendary Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band which performed regularly at the Village Vanguard in New York. An outstanding arranger and composer, his best known song being “A Child is Born,” we’ll hear the trumpet stylings of trumpeter Thad Jones all week long. Tonight on the “Other Nine to Five,” Dominic Walker will be “down in Monterey” on our Jazz Trip@Ten. Then later, on the Midnight Standard, we’ll hear another version of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust.” [Photo: pixabay/minka2507-3728206/]
