Dominic Walker: Modern Jazz Quartet
This week on All Night Jazz, we’ll focus on bassist Percy Heath. Born in North Carolina on April 30, 1923, Heath was raised in Philadelphia. He came from a very musical family. Heath was an early bebop adopter, working in the fledgling movement with pioneers Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s. In 1952, Heath was offered the bass chair in vibraphonist Milt Jackson’s quartet.
Dominic Walker will trek to Italy with the Modern Jazz Quartet on our Jazz Trip@Ten. Plus more music from our focus artist of the week, bassist Percy Heath. Then later, on the Midnight Standard, we’ll hear another version of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust.” The adventure begins tonight at nine on WUSF 89.7.
