T&N 6/16: Really Good Music Students!
On this date in 1950, the "Divertimento for Band" by the American composer, Vincent Persichetti, had its premiere with the composer conducting the Goldman Band. This was one of several compositions for concert band that quickly spread around the country and was played by thousands of high school and college bands. Perhaps you played this piece if you were a band geek as we’re known as today.
Sarasota is being visited by some of the top college music students in the word as the Sarasota Music Festival continues. Tonight, there’s a concert featuring Brahms' epic Piano Quartet No. 2 with each melodic line that seems to be a song that could be sung on a warm summer's evening. Samuel Barber's Summer Music is also on the program with music that draws its color from images of the lazy days of summer heat and the beauty of nature at its peak. It’s a great evening of chamber music at the Sarasota Opera House tonight at 8:00. Tickets and information are online at www.sarasotamusicfestival.org
