Then & Now 8/7: Mendelssohn in Scotland
On this date in 1829, Mendelssohn visited Fingal's Cave in the Hebrides Islands west of Scotland’s coast and started composing the 'Hebrides' Overture.
And there’s plenty of music right now in Scotland as the 70th annual Edinburgh International Festival is underway. Each year the festival celebrates the performing arts and serves as an annual meeting point for people of all nations. The Festival presents some of the finest performers and ensembles from the worlds of dance, opera, music and theatre for three weeks in August. Highlights for this year include violinist Christian Tetzlaff and pianist Leif Ove Andsnes in recital, The BBC Scottish Orchestra, pianist Mikhail Pletnev, the Budapest Festival Orchestra led by Ivan Fischer featuring Scottish violinist Nicola Beneditti (which not surprisingly, is already sold out!) and much more.
