Then & Now 8/2: Music in London
Several works had premieres on this date, all on the same concert! In 1990, David Matthews: Romanza for cello and small orchestra with Mstislav Rostropovich, Patrick Gowers: Suite for solo violin and chamber orchestra with José-Luis Garcia, and Patrick Doyle’s "The Thistle and the Rose" were all perfumed in the ballroom of Buckingham Palace in London, by the English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Raymond Leppard. All three works were specially written for a concert celebrating the 90th birthday of the Queen Mother.
We’ll take you on a virtual musical trip to London’s Royal Albert Hall this Friday night when SymphonyCast brings you another concert from the BBC Proms. Listen as the tireless Daniel Barenboim conducts the Symphony No. 1 by Edward Elgar, along with a performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto with soloist Lisa Batiashvili. That’s Friday night at 8:00 on Classical WSMR 89.1 & 103.9.
