Then & Now 8/15: Marching Onward

Johannes Nepomuk Maelzel

On this date in 1772, the German Inventor Johannes Nepomuk Maelzel, was born in Regensburg. Maelzel is credited with the creation of the metronome, and was the friend of Beethoven and collaborated with him on various projects.

Well, it’s that time of year when the modern day electronic metronome blares it’s beep beep beep from loud speakers across school football fields as marching bands prepare for their seasons of halftime shows and competitions. And taking marching to a new level is the organization Drum Corps International, which had its world championship competition this past weekend in Indianapolis. And for the 18th time in Drum Corps International's 45-year history, the Blue Devils are back on top of the drum corps universe. The most decorated of DCI's ensembles celebrated its 60th anniversary with a gold medal in Saturday's World Championship Finals.
