Then & Now 7/27: Letters From Bach
On this date in 1733, J.S. Bach sent a letter to Frederic Augustus, Elector of Saxony, requesting an official title to bolster his reputation in Leipzig. Accompanying the letter, Bach sent the "Kyrie" and "Gloria" from his Mass in b minor.
Later, near the end of his life, Bach visited his son CPE who worked for King Frederic of Prussia who was an accomplished musician who liked to challenge the elder Bach with some improvisation. When Bach returned home, he sent another letter, this time to the King. That letter contained music from his famous “Musical Offering”. You can hear some of that music this weekend on Sunday Baroque. Sunday morning at 10 on Classical WSMR 89.1 & 103.9.
