Then & Now 7/25: American Music in Europe
On this date in 1937, Samuel Barber's Symphony No. 1 was performed at the Salzburg Music Festival in Austria, by the Vienna Philharmonic. This was the first American symphonic work to be featured at this prestigious international festival.
And speaking of festivals, listen to Classical WSMR during the month of August for highlights from Switzerland’s premier summer music festival located on the edge of Lake Lucerne. The Festival attracts top-name classical soloists and orchestras from around the world every year. Highlights will include pianist Gabriela Montero with the Sao Paulo Symphony led by Marin Alsop in a performance of the Grieg Piano Concerto, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe will play Dvorak’s much loved “New World” Symphony, and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra plays Haydn and Gershwin. The Lucerne Festival, Saturday afternoons at 1:00 starting August 5th on Classical WSMR 89.1 & 103.9.
