Then & Now 6/30: Conductors in the News
On this date in 1958, the famous Finnish composer and conductor, Esa-Pekka Salonen, was born in Helsinki.
And just yesterday, another well-known conductor was in the news. Montreal Symphony Orchestra Music Director Kent Nagano has decided to leave the ensemble at the conclusion of the 2019-2020 season – after 16 years at the helm. Nagano said that after a long deliberation, he has decided not to accept the orchestra’s invitation to extend his contract. The Japanese-American Maestro went on to say that “over the past years we have accomplished nothing short of a miracle in shaping such a vital, financially stable, boldly innovative orchestra that continues to illuminate the relevance of the symphony orchestra for the 21st century,”
