Then & now 6/26: Patriotic Music
On this date in 2000, Robert Kapilow’s DC Monuments, had its premiere performed by the National Symphony. Kapilow wanted an appropriate topic for a piece of music about Washington, D.C., and it was while he was riding in from the airport he saw so many monuments in the city, that he made the decision to base his new work on those varied structures.
With the Fourth of July just about a week away, there’s a patriotic program of music this Sunday at the USF School of Music’s Concert Hall featuring the Florida Wind Band. The program is called Honor, Integrity and Service, featuring patriotic favorites. Veterans are invited to attend as there will be a special tribute for you. I’ll be there to serve as your emcee for this concert, and WSMR is going to record it so we can air it on Independence Day at 3pm.
