Then & Now 6/22: yMusic
On this date in 1871, Wagner’s "Kaiser March" had its American premiere at a Theodore Thomas Orchestra concert at Central Park Garden in New York City. These concerts from Thomas were given over eight summers starting in 1868, the German-born American conductor lead his orchestra and featured a mix of old and new music, and more than a few premieres.
And you can hear plenty of music that you may have not heard before as the Sarasota Music Festival comes to a close this weekend. On Friday night’s chamber music concert, you’ll be treated to the ground-breaking ensemble “yMusic”, a group of six young New York City musicians that flourishes in the overlap between classical and pop music. They will perform a series of six short pieces commissioned for their unique instrumentation. yMusic represents one vision for the future of classical music: new compositions full of accessibility and intrigue. The concert is this Friday night at the Sarasota Opera House. Tickets and information are available online at www.sarasotamusicfestival.org.
