Vassili Kalinnikov: Symphony No. 2 in A

Vassili Kalinnikov: Symphony No. 2 in A

The story of Russian composer Vasily Kalinnikov is a tragically short one, not unlike the story of many artists throughout the ages. He lived a troubled life, growing up in poverty and dealing with chronic illnesses throughout his lifetime: The composer died just before his 35th birthday. Understandably, Kalinnikov produced only a handful of works, but what he did leave behind is quite an enjoyable body of work, and a testament to his musical talent. His 2nd Symphony is this evening’s masterwork, a work that was also his final symphony, composed in 1897, and the composer completed the work despite suffering from consumption of the throat.
