Then and Now 3/31 - Franz Joseph Haydn
On this date in musical history, the father of the symphony, Franz Joseph Haydn was born in 1732 in Austria. It’s also the date on which, many years later, Rogers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma debuted on Broadway. These days, the music of Haydn is celebrated in festivals in Eisenstadt, Austria, and in England, where he was sort of a favored “adopted” son. And there’s an Oklahoma Haydn festival coming up in June.
