Hour 1:
“Battaglia” is the Italian word for battle, and in music it refers to a composition that portrays the sounds and emotions of a battle. It was a popular form in the baroque era, and we’re listen-ing to a variety of battaglias on this Memorial Day weekend.

Hour 2:
This Memorial Day weekend, Sunday Baroque will offer music of remembrance, including selections from a haunting and ancient Requiem Mass, musical poppies, and heroic marches. Those are some of the musical highlights you’ll hear this week on Sunday Baroque.

Hour 3:
Jean-Philippe Rameau’s opera ballet THE FESTIVALS OF POLYHYMNIA was composed to cele-brate a battle victory in the War of the Austrian Succession. Its first performance was in 1745 at the Paris Opera. You can hear some of Rameau’s music from THE FESTIVALS OF POLYHYMNIA this week on Sunday Baroque.

Hour 4:
There’s a quote attributed to Walt Whitman that “Peace is always beautiful.”  Many composers expressed the beauty of peace through their music. One of Johann Sebastian Bach’s prayerful pleas for peace on earth is a highlight of Sunday Baroque this Memorial Day Weekend.
