Sergei Rachmaninoff: Symphony No. 1 in d Op. 13

While Rachmaninoff’s First Symphony is seen as a masterwork today, the story surrounding its premiere left a bit of a shadow on Rachmaninoff’s career. The story goes that during the premiere, the conductor – Alexander Glazunov – had a bit too much to drink, and was conducing “like a zombie,” according to one account. The result was a disaster for Rachmaninoff, whose music was misrepresented, but the piece was rediscovered in 1945 and was given a deserved second performance.
