Robert Schumann: Fantasy in C Op. 17

Clara Schumann had quite a bit of influence over the creation of Robert Schumann’s Fantasy for solo piano. Prior to their marriage, the relationship suffered through some enforced separations – Clara’s father did not approve of the courtship – and during one of these separations, Robert Schumann began work on the work for solo piano. He wrote to Clara: “The first movement is the most passionate I have ever composed; it is a profound lament on your account.” Clara wasn’t the only person Schumann had in mind while writing the work, though. He was also thinking of Beethoven, and Schumann even included a quote from Beethoven’s song cycle “To the Distant Beloved.”
