Richard Strauss: Sonatina No. 1 for Winds “From an Invalid’s Workshop”

The Sonatina No. 1 for winds by Richard Strauss is a work the composer completed late in his life – in 1943 – at a time when he was recovering from an illness, which is why he subtitled the Sonatina “From an Invalid’s Workshop.” It’s a three movement work that borrows mood and character from other works by Strauss, like the recently written second horn concerto and Der Rosenkavalier.
