Richard Strauss: Don Quixote

Richard Strauss: Don Quixote

When Richard Strauss composed his tone poem Don Quixote, subtitled Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character, he intended for it to be a companion piece to his other heroic tone poem, Ein Heldenlaben. Both feature soloists that represent the hero in their respective stories – Ein Heldenlaben has the solo violin representing the hero, and in Don Quixote, the solo cello assumes the role of the knightly character.
