Johannes Brahms: Piano Quintet in f Op. 34

Johannes Brahms: Piano Quintet in f Op. 34

The Piano Quintet in f minor by Johannes Brahms had a bit of a rocky history. First, Brahms imagined the work as a string quintet, but violinist Joseph Joachim claimed that the music wasn’t suited for that instrumentation. So, Brahms refashioned it as a sonata for two pianos…. But then Clara Schumann, whom he wrote it for, was not satisfied, and asked the composer to change it back to the way it was. Finally, then, Brahms made the version as it stands today, a bit of a compromise, and it is a work by a youthful Brahms that is more risk-averse than some of the other compositions from that period.
