Igor Stravinsky: Pulcinella Suite

Igor Stravinsky: Pulcinella Suite

The story of Pulcinella did not originate with Stravinsky, nor did it really originate with the great Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev (though he is that one that brought it to Stravinsky’s attention). Diaghilev brought forth manuscripts from 1700 Italy, of which the subject of many were the hero Pulcinella. Stravinsky sifted through these manuscripts, some of which were composed by Pergolesi – the rest by other, little-known composers – and he chose some to incorporate into the ballet score. Stravinsky actually even composed onto the old manuscripts themselves, more or less making them older composers his collaborators. [Photo: http://bit.ly/24MoKw4]
