Hector Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique Op. 14

Hector Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique Op. 14

Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique is perhaps his best known work, a revolutionary masterpiece that served as a breakthrough in the composer’s career. The work is largely programmatic and even thought to be autobiographic: in it, a young and sensitive artist experiences a series of opium-induced visions related to an unattainable love. This love is associated with a particular recurring melody featured over the course of the work, in visions that include a ball, a scene in the countryside, a march to the scaffold, and a witches’ sabbath.
