Franz Joseph Haydn: Symphony No. 99 in E-flat
As Franz Joseph Haydn was approaching the age of 60, he accepted an offer to compose an opera, half a dozen symphonies, and other works to be premiered in London under his baton. This was at a time in history when the average life expectancy was 40 years old, so the fact that Haydn took on such a series of projects is even more remarkable considering his age. At the age of 61, Haydn completed the second of the so called “London” symphonies: the Symphony No. 99 in E-flat, and it’s our Evening Masterwork tonight.
