Franz Joseph Haydn: Symphony No. 102 in B-flat
Out of all of Haydn’s 106 symphonies, the Symphony No. 102 in B-flat is, at times, regarded as the best symphony the composer wrote, and it’s easy to hear why. But it’s a bit perplexing as to why the symphony is one of the least known out of Haydn’s final twenty symphonies. Though the Symphony No. 102 has no nickname, it could almost be called the “miracle” symphony… even though that belongs to No. 96… because during the premiere a chandelier fell to the floor of the hall. One it was clear no one was hurt, people shouted, “it’s a miracle” – but alas, no nickname. The Symphony No. 102 by Franz Joseph Haydn, our Evening Masterwork tonight at 7 on Classical WSMR.
