Camille Saint-Saens: Violin Concerto No. 3 in b Op. 61
The Violin Concerto No. 3 is among a number of works Camille Saint-Saens composed for the virtuoso violinist Pablo de Sarasate – and Sarasate premiered the work the same year the composer completed the work, in 1880, on one of Saint-Saens’s Monday soiree concerts. The work is much like the previous violin concerti that Saint-Saens wrote: it allows the soloist to show off their technical abilities, while requiring a kind of polished musicality. But the Third Concerto is unique in that the composer uses the three-movement format.
