All Soul's Mass with Faure Requiem
On Friday, November 2nd at 7:00 p.m., the Choir of St. John’s will offer a liturgical performance of the Requiem (Op. 48) of Gabriel Faure within the context of a Solemn Requiem Mass for the feast of All Souls’, the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed.
Faure composed the Requiem between 1887 and 1890, and it is the best-known of all his works. The first version of the work received its premiere in 1888 at the Church of La Madeleine in Paris, where Faure was himself organist. Faure wrote of the work, “Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.”
